The Fisherman Aesthetic

unnamed-

Have you noticed Fisherman Aesthetic trend taking internet by storm (pun intended)?

Much like the Coastal Grandma trend, the Fisherman Aesthetic trend is inspired by a life beside the sea… think muted coastal tones, and comfortable loose silhouettes. But with the added inspiration of nautical workwear and colourful boatyards bringing in flashes of strong primary colours, fish (literally) and traditional knitwear.

Think stripes and gingham layered underneath a cable knit cardie or a wax jacket… a palette of soft weathered tones (sage, olive and browns) and classic nautical colours (navy and white) with pops of classic maritime colours like red and yellow.

This trend is made for crafters and digging into it can lead to a much loved me-made. Below are a few outfit ideas using our fabric and buttons and some sewing (and knitting) patterns we've picked out! And a couple of fun fishy accessories…

The 'beach, please' look

Outfit -

First up a muted and beachy palette of blues, greens and neutrals with a touch of seaside sparkle!

As for the patterns we picked out for this look, first is the James Sailor Smock from Ready To Sew, which fits this theme PERFECTLY… A contemporary take on the classic French smock, this versatile top is functional and chic. We've paired it with our Blue Gingham Linen for a soft summery feel but it would work equally with a stiffer fabric like our Checkers Cotton Canvas.

For the trousers we picked Pleat Asymmetrical Pants by The Fold Line, Inspired by the traditional pants worn by Thai fisherman but with a modern silhouette. We've paired them with our Beige Wide Stripe Tencel but they would look SUPER fun in our crinkled Gingham Linen.

Of course it wouldn't be a Fisherman's look without a traditional cable cardigan! Unsurprising knitters have been embracing this trend for a while. If you’re not aware of the history of knitwear in fishing communities it’s a lovely part of history to go down and dates back to the late 1800s!

The first knitted pattern we've picked is the Book club cardigan by Sari Nordlund and our choice of yarn is Irish Donegal Wool from Wild and Woolly in Teal.

Finishing off this outfit is a cute Cornish Mackerel bag from Etsy!

The 'oh buoy' look

Outfit -

Second up, a fun nautical colourway of red, blue and sand… with some double gingham (because WHY NOT?), colourful buttons right that would be at home on a fishing boat, some cute but quirky lobster earrings and a SUPER fun fish bag sewing pattern, which would be a really fun way to use up scraps of your Pigeon Wishes fabric!

For the top we picked the Fibre Mood Harmony Top, a seriously cute retro top inspired by sailor shirts. Which we paired with our Pistachio Crinkled Gingham Linen.

The trousers are the same pattern as before (Pleat Asymmetrical Pants by The Fold Line) but without the pocket option! We paired this pattern with our Red Grid Print Viscose.

For the cardigan we picked the Twirlace Cardigan by Valentina Bogdanova and paired it with our Painterly Buttons.

The 'Off the scales' look

Outfit -

Our last outfit is inspired by the subtler tones of fishscales and the classic Aran cream cardigan…

We chose the Mary White Dress Pattern from Merchant & Mills and paired it with our Grey Gingham Crinkled Linen… much like the Harmony Top earlier, this pattern can either be made into a top or a dress!

The cardigan pattern we chose is the Dagmar Jacket from Petite Knit which we paired with our Quartz Buttons for a fun contrast (they would also look fab on the dress!)

Finishing off this outfit are these cute Anchovy earrings by Wolf & Moon and another make… this cute ripple stitch raffia Salada Bag Kit by Wool & the Gang!

community makes

We love this community make by @institchesknits who used the Sari Nordland Book Club Cardigan knitting pattern to make this seafaring worthy cable knit cardigan using our Wicked Buttons!
